FAQ - PRIVATE HIRE

Can we bring our own drinks?

We have a fully stocked bar offering a variety of beverages, including hot drinks, soft drinks, and alcoholic options. You can also add a special touch by pre-ordering welcome drinks or bottles of wine for your tables. Please ask for our pre-order list. Guests may bring their own wine or prosecco with prior corkage payment. The corkage fee is £10 per wine bottle and £14 per prosecco. No other drinks are allowed on board.

Can we bring our own catering?

All catering must be arranged through City Cruises York. We offer a selection of delicious buffets and takeaway options.

Do you cater for special dietary requirements?

Yes, we do. Please notify us at least seven days before your cruise so we can inform our caterers and accommodate your requests.

What time will the buffet be served?

Hot buffets are usually served about 30 minutes after boarding. Cold buffets can be served at your convenience. Let the staff know when you’re ready, though we suggest eating early to ensure freshness.

Can I bring my own entertainment?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own bands, singers, or entertainers. There is a £60 fee for setup time. Performers must bring all their equipment, be ready 45 minutes before departure, and disembark promptly when the boat returns. Please note that live music cannot be played while docked.

Do you have a screen for meetings?

We offer a projector, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please let us know in advance if you need it.

Do you provide a microphone?

While the skipper’s microphone is reserved for emergency and commentary use, you may borrow a microphone from any DJ or live band booked for your event. Otherwise, we suggest bringing a hands-free microphone if needed.

Where and when do we board the boat?

Boarding begins 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time. The exact location will be confirmed at the time of booking, and a map with parking and travel information will be provided.

How does the bar service work?

Unless otherwise arranged, the bar operates on a pay-as-you-go basis, accepting both cash and card payments. You may also set up a tab, payable before disembarkation.

Do you accept American Express?

We accept most major credit cards, except American Express.

Do I have to provide catering for all guests?

Yes, we ask that all guests be catered for to ensure no one is left out. However, we may accommodate special requests on rare occasions.

What route will the boat take?

Our cruises typically cover the stretch of river between Clifton and Naburn. The route depends on the length of your cruise, time of day, and river conditions. For a 3-hour charter, we can reach Naburn Locks; shorter cruises remain closer to the city and scenic countryside.

Can I play my own music?

Yes, you can bring your own music via a phone, tablet, or MP3 player to be played through our sound system. You will need an aux cable or an adapter for your device, as we do not currently offer Bluetooth or USB connections. Please create a playlist in advance and be prepared to leave the device with the captain.

What is the minimum/maximum number of guests allowed on board?

Our charters can accommodate between 20 and 100 guests, depending on the boat selected.

Are children allowed on board?

Yes, children are welcome on our charters, but they must be supervised at all times.

Can we decorate the boat?

Yes, you can bring your own decorations. Please ensure they don’t cause any damage and are cleaned up after the event. You may begin decorating 30 minutes before boarding.

Are the boats wheelchair accessible?

Our River Duchess boat is accessible and designed specifically for guests requiring wheelchair access.

Do you cater to all dietary needs?

Yes, we work with our caterers to accommodate dietary requests. Please inform us at least seven days before your cruise so we can make the necessary arrangements.

When do you need final guest numbers?

We require final guest numbers three weeks before your event.

When is the final payment due?

Full payment is due 14 days before the date of your cruise.

Do you allow ticketed events?

Yes, we host a variety of ticketed events, including concerts, tribute acts, and themed nights.

Is smoking allowed on board?

Smoking, including vaping, is not allowed in indoor areas. However, smoking is permitted on the open top deck if available.

Are dogs allowed on board?

Absolutely! All of our boats are dog-friendly, and we encourage you to bring your furry friends along.
