On June 11th, take a trip to “The Rock” and experience tours of the famed San Francisco landmark on this special milestone of the anniversary of the most infamous prison escape in American history.
San Francisco, CA – City Cruises by City Experiences, which operates Alcatraz City Cruises, invites Bay Area residents and tourists alike to recognize the 60+ year anniversary of the infamous Alcatraz Escape with a trip to Alcatraz Island. As the official concessioner to the National Park Service, and in partnership with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Alcatraz City Cruises offers in-depth visits to Alcatraz with an award-winning audio tour, special exhibits, and behind-the-scenes tours.
On June 11, guests can follow in the footsteps of Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin, who 60+ years earlier escaped from the island without a trace, sparking decades of speculation and pop culture memes. Interpretive programs like Doing Time: The Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour, feature a look at the escapees’ cells when a routine early morning bed check revealed that the three convicts were not in their bunks. In their place, were cleverly built dummy heads made of plaster, flesh-tone paint, and real human hair that apparently fooled the guards on duty the previous night. You can also see crude tools made from sharpened spoons that the prisoners used in their escape. Upon this discovery by the guard, the prison went into lockdown and an intense search ensued.
The 1962 escape is probably the most famous prison break in American history and remains a tale of intrigue for many seeking to see the prison where it all happened. The three men involved have never been located, dead or alive.
Frank Morris was brought to Alcatraz in January 1960, after convictions for bank robbery, burglary, and other crimes as well as repeated attempts to escape various prisons. Later that year, John Anglin was sent to Alcatraz, followed by his brother Clarence in early 1961. All three inmates knew each other from previous prison stints.
The escape of the intrepid trio, who are still considered FBI fugitives, has been memorialized in books, documentaries, and most notably, the 1979 Hollywood film, Escape from Alcatraz, featuring Clint Eastwood as Morris, which was filmed on-site and is an adaptation of the 1963 non-fiction book of the same name. Mystery still surrounds this bold escape, and no one really knows if they survived or if they drowned as they fled the island on a raft constructed from fifty inflated raincoats. Shreds of material from the raincoat and personal effects of the men were found floating in the bay. Alcatraz was closed shortly after the true events on which the film was based.
