TASTES & TRADITIONS OF ROME: TESTACCIO FOOD & MARKET TOUR ITINERARY

Start your Testaccio food tour the Italian way with coffee and the best maritozzo in Rome (which is saying a lot!) in a bustling bakery and pastry shop that serves as a meeting point for neighborhood residents.

Then, following a typical day’s schedule for Romans, we’re off to the local market to say buongiorno to a few of the friendly vendors. (Some have had their stalls for more than 40 years!) As you make your way through the market, you'll try one of Rome’s most beloved pizzas, taste three kinds of cheese from a local farm, and learn why hand-cut prosciutto is one of the best things you'll eat in Italy. And of course, you can’t leave without digging into the original Roman street food, panino, which you'll enjoy at one of Rome's best-loved sandwich shops.

After your Rome market tour, pass by the old slaughterhouse, which employed many working class Romans for a century from the late 1800s and gave rise to the neighborhood as we know it today. Then step into a sixth generation, family-run trattoria for lunch. You’ll  dig into the most incredible pasta you'll ever eat, in the form of a dish that encompasses the meatpacking history of Testaccio, and wash it down with a glass of Italian red.

As you eat, you'll learn more about what mealtimes typically involve for Italians and meet the proud owner who will give you a personal tour of their stunning wine cellar. Discover its unexpected ties to the Ancient Romans and fascinating structure that creates the perfect natural conditions for storing wines. Outside the restaurant, you'll catch a glimpse of this hidden-in-plain-sight archaeological phenomenon as your guide explains how it even inspired the name of the neighborhood!

Last but not least, it's time to end your Testaccio food tour on a sweet note! We’re off to an artisanal gelateria famous for its local, seasonal flavors. Get recommendations for perfect flavor pairings from the owner and learn how to separate the real-deal gelato shops from the tourist traps.

Much more than just a Rome food and market tour, you'll eat in Romans' favorite neighborhood to dine out and savor the city's best dishes while uncovering its fascinating history.
