There’s no greater satisfaction than getting out to the parks with your four-legged bestie. With 37 distinct park sites, over 130 miles of trails, 1,200 historic structures and 80,000 acres north and south of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) encourages locals and visitors alike to responsibly explore the terrain with their dogs.
The GGNRA provides trails, beaches and open spaces that are available for dog walking and is the only park in the National Park Service to designate particular areas for allowing responsible dog walking off-leash when under voice and sight control.
GGNRA is home to more than 2,400 plant and animal species (37 of which are rare, threatened, or endangered) and countless cultural resources including American coastal fortifications and Native American artifacts. Dog walkers are asked to observe signs indicating where pets are permitted in the park to ensure that park resources will be around for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
There are endless opportunities for dog walking throughout GGNRA sites, but visitors who bring their pet(s) to Golden Gate National Recreation Area should protect pets, other people and park wildlife (more on that here: https://www.nps.gov/goga/planyourvisit/dog-friendly-areas.htm#wheretowalkyourdog)
For suggested dog-walking locations by county, check out the afore-mentioned link with locations in the following counties: Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo.
Also, be mindful that there are commercial dog walking permit requirements as well as Federal regulations that apply to all dog walkers. The above link can provide more information.
