London’s tanning. Or at least we hope we will. Whatever the weather (or “whatevs” as the younger ones amongst us might say), we hope you’ll have fun over the summer as well as getting in a bit of a tan.
Our sightseeing cruises are huge fun. Turn up at a pier at any time of day, buy a ticket and get on a boat. Or pre-plan, book online, then get on a boat, which is easier, to be honest.
Great views, river breezes, seating that supports, and a café-bar serving gin-and-tonic or ice cream, and more of what you fancy, are just some of the things that will help you have fun.
Open-air upper decks, which our boats have in plenty, really add to the relaxed, leisurely experience. And if you prefer a saloon with big windows then we can do that as well. Both provide a unique perspective on the magnificent sights that you can take in between Westminster to Greenwich.
From the boat you can see Big Ben, the London Eye, Tower Bridge and much more. Plus you’ll probably get a live commentary from a highly-experienced riverboat captain or mate, many of whom are members of Company of Watermen and Lightermen, founded in the time of Henry VIII; and even if their talks are not available an expertly pre-recorded guide plays in their place.
Our tip – turn up early, and you’ll find fewer people around as well as having more time to spend out and about on the river.
Cruises go every 40 minutes from our four main piers, at Westminster, London Eye, Tower and Greenwich.
Other long-running and popular favourites include: our evening cruises, called Sundowner in summer and with a welcome G&T on Mondays and Tuesdays, and fizz on other nights; and our premier dinner cruise, The London Showboat, which (most nights, and depending on tide) makes it down to Thames Barrier and back.
Making a debut this summer are some new stars: Movie Nights, staged in association with TimeOut. You can enjoy films with a London theme (‘Love, Actually’) or a watery spin (‘Jaws’, ‘The Little Mermaid’). Other movies playing will be endlessly romantic (‘Casablanca’), stone-cold funny (‘The Big Lebowski’) or both (‘When Harry Met Sally’). See them – and other classics – on the river.
Jazz – that’s another part of our great big summer of fun. We seem to have it coming out of ears.
Every Friday night one of our dining boats takes a crowd of enthusiasts out on the river to listen to the smooth jazz of Chijazz, who pump out a fun set of tunes to get your feet tapping and even dancing.
On selected Thursdays our moored restaurant ship R.S.Hispaniola serves up an atmospheric dinner-dance with a smart set menu, free-flowing prosecco, and, yes, smooth smooth jazz.
On Sunday afternoons the ship’s open front deck plays host to a jazz saxophonist so you can soak up music along with rays, views and breezes, cocktails and cups of tea. (Or even raid the Bar Deck menu, and, yes, our musician will move into the Upper Deck restaurant if it rains, so then you can go à la carte or bar menu).
If you want to get your adrenaline pumping, climb aboard Thamesjet. Our high speed rib rides race beyond Tower Bridge to Canary Wharf, twisting and turning in pursuit of a rogue boat!
So go on, do it the River Thames way, make June and July all jazzy, amplify August with a bit of acoustic, and swing into September. It’s all part of the summer of fun.
