Let’s face it. It’s cold out there. Yet, everything in this amazing metropolis continues to surge through these frigid days to get things done!
Working on the water, I automatically notice a group of hard working men and women fighting through the elements to ensure that the city keeps flowing. That’s right–those that work in New York Harbor and its rivers.
Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate and thank our police force, fire departments, emergency workers, construction workers, bus drivers, train conductors, and especially the man in his truck making sure my coffee is fresh and hot when I walk up.
Let’s stop and thank those that help keep this city moving on the water. Our expert Captain Mark Phillips (officially our Director of Marine and Facility Operations), estimates there are about 3,000-5,000 employees on the NYC waterfront. Between, shipping companies, ferries, Harbor FDNY and Emergency crews, the D.E.P., dining cruises, tugboat companies and all other diverse industries in between, they work hard for hours in this frigid weather to ensure that we are safe, get to work, provide visitors and locals with an amazing New York sightseeing experiences on the harbor.
So the next time you are sitting comfortably on board a warm Liberty Landing Ferry to Manhattan, on board the Governor’s Island Ferry enjoying the history of NYC, reveling in the glory of Lady Liberty on board Statue Cruises, enjoying the historical sites on the harbor from cruises on Pier 15 and Pier 40, or a romantic dinner cruise with your sweetheart and hot toddy listening to music on the Hornblower Hybrid. Thank all of the men and women who helped make that trip possible.
To all the captains, marine and maintenance crews, and everyone else working on New York Harbor’s waters, surrounding rivers, and piers–we salute you!
And of course…we can’t forget our partners: Liberty Landing Ferry, Governor’s Island Ferry and Statue Cruises.
