For New Yorkers, Groundhog Day 2015 provided a tragic update that six more weeks of winter lie ahead. In case you didn’t notice, it’s absolutely frigid outside, and thanks to Phil’s shadow we can expect the cold to last a little bit longer.
Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most beloved and furry seasonal prognosticator, saw his shadow on Monday morning (despite overcast skies), portending six more weeks of winter.
Phil, you’re a cute rodent…ahem…marmot, but really?! Haven’t the two snowstorms over the last 10 days been enough?
I don’t know about you, but the commute to work in New York this winter is beginning to parallel Bill Murray’s déjà vu from the cult classic film Groundhog Day. Cue up Ned Ryerson…
Ned: Phil? Hey, Phil? Phil! Phil Connors? Phil Connors, I thought that was you!
Phil: Hi, how you doing? Thanks for watching.
Ned: Hey, hey! Now, don’t you tell me you don’t remember me because I sure as heckfire remember you.
Phil: Not a chance.
Ned: Ned… Ryerson. “Needlenose Ned”? “Ned the Head”? C’mon, buddy. Case Western High. Ned Ryerson: I did the whistling belly-button trick at the high school talent show? Bing! Ned Ryerson: got the shingles real bad senior year, almost didn’t graduate? Bing, again. Ned Ryerson: I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple times until you told me not to anymore? Well?
Phil: Ned Ryerson?
Ned: Bing!
Phil: Bing.
Maybe if we all remain on our best behavior, the next six weeks will seem more like three weeks (or even two). Good luck out there New York. We’ll need it.
