The Falls Illumination Board has successfully provided magnificent colours on the Falls throughout the seasons of Winter, Spring, Fall and Summer. The recent 2015 schedule was released shortly after the announcement of Mark Thomas who was appointed Chairman for the Niagara Falls Illumination Board. Mark is the Western District Director of the New York State Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation. Mark came on board after replacing Niagara Falls Mayor, Jim Diodati who held the position since November 2012. Mayor Jim Diodati will continue to serve as a board member to represent the city of Niagara Falls, Canada.
Mark Thomas role has begun and will sit as chair for the next two years. “The lighting of the falls is such a vital part of the visitor experience at Niagara Falls. I am honored to serve a term as chair as we work together to sustain and enhance this important feature of our shared natural wonder,” said Thomas. The board was established in 1925. The Niagara Falls Illumination Board is made up of representatives from the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario; the City of Niagara Falls, New York; Ontario Power Generation Inc.; The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; and The Niagara Parks Commission. It is the Illumination Board’s responsibility and mandate to finance and maintain the nightly illumination of both the Horseshoe and American Falls.
Visitors travelling to Niagara Falls, Canada are always in awe of the magnificent and vivid colours that radiate and illuminate the Falls at night. The colours always add an exciting and joyful experience for those who walk along the Niagara Parkway. The Falls Illumination has formed a schedule of the lights that display on all three Falls (Canadian Horseshoe, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls) so that visitors can time their stay and coordinate their days to watch the natural wonder in a different light. Many times the Falls Illumination board will pay tribute to a national cause or registered charity lighting the Falls with a symbolic colour. Those who wish to request the Falls be lit in a specific colour must submit a request no later than 30 days prior.
For guests who travel to Niagara Falls from the Spring through to the Fall months have the chance to experience the Falls Illumination up close and personal onboard the Falls Illumination Cruise.
