Whether it’s your first time in town or you’re a born-and-bred local, if you’re spending Labor Day Weekend in Chicago, you need to have a game plan. From its incredible architecture — they literally invented skyscrapers, you know — and its storied past to the friendly people, buzzing atmosphere, diverse neighborhoods, and more, there are so many fun Labor Day activities in Chicago. (Plus, with good public transport, it’s a breeze to get around for tourists, and you don’t even have to rent a car!)
Many people might not think of Chicago as a city on the water, but it certainly is. Just take one look out on Lake Michigan and you’ll believe us! So, if you’re hoping to experience this majestic city from the water this Labor Day Weekend (and have a blast while you’re on land, too) you’ve come to the right place. Here’s a short list we’ve put together of some of the best Chicago Labor Day events of 2024 — including three of our favorite City Cruises options to cap off an incredible summer!

Chicago Signature Lunch Cruise on Lake Michigan: If you’re hoping to make some memories, join us for an unforgettable afternoon on Lake Michigan with a Signature Chicago Lunch Cruise. Labor Day Weekend Thrills on Lake Michigan
Chicago Seadog Extreme Thrill Ride: For a more high-octane cruise around the city, you’ll want to buckle up for the Seadog Extreme Thrill Ride on Lake Michigan, a high-speed experience of Chicago’s iconic skyline! Departing from Navy Pier, get ready for pure exhilaration as the Seadog dares full 360-degree spins, hairpin turns and twists and full-throttle slalom runs, all with the high power of Seadog Extreme’s two 1400 HP engines. Top off the fun and splash-filled experience with a playlist of hits, and lively narration throughout the ride. This ride isn’t for the faint of heart, so make sure to hold onto your hats as you make a wake on the lake!
For those seeking a lighter touch – buckle up for Lake Michigan’s most iconic thrill ride with a Seadog Lakefront Speedboat Tour! Stunning panoramic views of Chicago are enjoyed at top speed as you race across the shoreline while an entertaining and informative narrator shares fun facts about the history of the city skyline. Departing from Navy Pier, this exciting experience combining sightseeing with an exhilarating speedboat ride is perfect for the whole family (even the dog!). USA Today names the Seadog as “one the best things to do in Chicago with kids!”

On our Premier Plus Chicago Dinner Cruise, you and your guests will indulge in an exquisite evening of gourmet dining, dazzling skyline views, and unparalleled entertainment. Of course, this unforgettable dinner cruise experience is complete with a fully stocked cash bar, masterful DJ entertainment, and top-notch service from our highly trained staff. If you’re ready to make lifelong memories of dining and dancing into a spectacular evening on the Chicago River, you’ve come to the right place!
Other Fun Things to Do Over Labor Day Weekend 2024 in Chicago
As for food, you won’t want to miss the famous deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s or the hot dogs at Portillos. We do recommend venturing out and trying some other, lesser-known spots in town as well. Oh, and for any sports fans out there, the Cubs are playing the Pirates at Wrigley Field on Labor Day this year, so don’t forget to purchase your tickets in advance in case they sell out! Seeing one of the oldest baseball stadiums in the country is an absolute must, but this year they’re playing at home during what we think is prime baseball weather — not too hot and not too cold — so be sure to take advantage of this once-a-year opportunity that’s fun for the whole family!
At the end of the day, no matter what you decide to do during Labor Day weekend in Chicago, we at City Cruises hope you make us part of your holiday weekend plans, but most importantly that you have a safe and enjoyable time.
