London may seem intimidating at first, but it is actually an incredible family-friendly place to visit – with lots of amazing options to keep the kids (of all ages) entertained. Family days out in London don’t need to be rushed or stressful – the key is all about knowing the right attractions and places to visit.
Hopefully this list of family things to do in London will help you narrow down your choices. If you have time – maybe even try to fit in 2 or 3 of these suggestions… That way your kids won’t get bored, and you can explore different parts of the city!
The Science Museum
If your little ones are budding scientists or curious about the world – then a trip to the Science Museum is going to amaze them. You can learn all about the history of space and astronauts, as well as the physics behind space travel too. For the really little ones, there are hands-on, multi-sensory areas like The Garden (ages three to six) and Pattern Pod (ages five to eight).
Hyde Park
This huge park in the middle of London has plenty of space for a family picnic, and a game of rounders! In the summertime there are deck chairs to rent, little paddle boats on the lake, and icecream vans. It’s a summertime dream!
River Cruise
If your little ones are fed up of walking (or if you’re fed up with carrying them!) then a river cruise is a super fun way to rest your legs, and be entertained – all at the same time. So many of London’s best sights can be seen from the river, so taking a relaxing cruise along the water to soak them all in, is the perfect family-friendly solution. Why not experience the epitome of river dining with City Cruises’ Lunch Cruise on the River Thames? Renowned as one of the most popular cruises combined with a delectable 2-course lunch, showcasing British flavours and traditions, this experience promises an unparalleled journey. Perhaps you want to sightsee all day and relax while you dine on a London Dinner Cruise on the Thames.Indulge in a sumptuous four-course meal of traditional British flavours, meticulously crafted by our skilled chefs to tantalize your taste buds. As you savour each dish, enjoy uninterrupted views of London’s most famous landmarks, including the Tower Bridge, the Shard, and the Houses of Parliament. Our fully stocked bar offers a selection of beverages to complement your meal, with upgrade optnos available to make your evening extra special. This extremely popular dinner cruise is likely to sell out, so plan early. Enjoy onboard entertainment as well as commentary via our app for fascinating insights into the city’s history and landmarks. You will have a memorable journey for either lunch or dinner and the views are unmatched.
London Zoo
For kids who love animals, London Zoo is a beautifully kept zoo in the centre of the city. There are loads of animals for the children to be amazed at – but our favourites have to be the penguins! If you want to spend a little extra budget on the day, then you can book a close-up session with the penguins and other animals, which allow the kids to get even more involved in zoo-life.
Vauxhall City Farm
Another option for the animal-loving families out there! If you prefer farm animals to jungle animals, maybe the Vauxhall City Farm is more your cup of tea? It is a little piece of the countryside in the city, and a great family day out in London.
Covent Garden
Covent Garden is an open-air square in central London full of shops and street entertainers. The street entertainers are free to watch (a donation is advised however, at the end), and most are fantastic with kids, with the shows being geared towards them. Some will even get the children involved in the performance!
Harry Potter Studio Tour
This suggestion is a little journey out of London, but The Harry Potter Studio Tour may be just the family day out you’re after, especially if you have any muggles in the family. Jump on a train to Watford Junction, where a special bus will be waiting to escort you to the Studios. It’s a truly magical experience, and definitely one they’ll always remember. It’s very popular, so always book in advance.
Hamleys Toy Shop
Located on Regent Street in central London, Hamleys is everything kids dream about. They will love you for bringing them here, and although it can be a little chaotic inside – the whole place is designed for kids. There are entertainers on each floor, lots of stuff to try and test out, and floors upon floors of fun.
The London Dungeon
Now, this suggestion isn’t for those with young children, but rather for those aged 8 and up. It’s a spooky 90 minute tour of London’s murky history and sketchy past, using fantastic actors, music and re-enactments. There are special effects, and the storytelling is just fantastic for older kids. If you’re visiting around Halloween, this is definitely a fun (and slightly freaky) family day out.
Every Day is Family Day in London
London is a spectacular city with a wealth of choices for travellers with children. From world-class museums, parks, studio tours, to relaxing and breathtaking River Cruises. There is so much to see and do and is full of child-friendly, fun, cultural, historic, and educational activiies bound to entertain all. The capital city is a family-friendly city that the whole gang will love and should be at the top of your list.
