The Beginnings and Formation of Chicago’s Team

Under the ownership of Charles Comiskey, the team relocated to St. Paul, Minnesota, becoming the St. Paul Saints. Comiskey moved the franchise to Chicago in 1900, with the Western League’s transition to the American League, naming them the Chicago White Stockings—a nod to the city’s original National League team, which later became the Cubs. By 1904, the team’s name was shortened to the Chicago White Sox.

Early Success and the “Hitless Wonders”

The White Sox wasted no time making their mark in the American League. In 1906, they clinched their first World Series title, defeating the crosstown rival Chicago Cubs in six games. Dubbed the “Hitless Wonders” due to their lackluster offensive statistics during the regular season, the team relied heavily on exceptional pitching and defense to secure their first championship. The franchise’s second World Series title came in 1917, when they triumphed over the New York Giants.

“The South Siders” experienced a resurgence in the 1950s under manager Al López, with standout players like Nellie Fox and Luis Aparicio. In 1959, the team clinched the American League pennant. However, they fell short in the World Series, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. Despite decades of ups and downs, the White Sox have always been a team of resilience and determination.

The Climb Back to the Top: 2005 World Series

After an 88-year championship drought, the White Sox finally reclaimed baseball glory in 2005. Managed by Ozzie Guillén, the team dominated the regular season, winning 99 games and carrying that momentum through the postseason. In the World Series, the White Sox swept the Houston Astros, securing their third championship in franchise history. This historic victory cemented the White Sox’s place among baseball’s elite teams and remains one of the most cherished moments in Chicago sports history.

Notable Players and Legacies

Throughout their history, the White Sox have been home to numerous Hall of Famers and notable players, including:

  • Frank Thomas: Known as “The Big Hurt,” Thomas was one of baseball’s most dominant hitters, winning back-to-back MVP awards in the 1990s.
  • Paul Konerko: A key figure in the 2005 championship team, Konerko’s leadership and clutch performances have solidified his place as a White Sox legend.
  • Mark Buehrle: A fan favorite, Buehrle was known for his consistency and durability. His perfect game in 2009 is one of the most iconic moments in White Sox history, and he played an instrumental part in the 2005 World Series run.
  • Michael Jordan: Yes, the Michael Jordan! After stepping away from basketball in 1994, Jordan signed with the White Sox and played for their minor league affiliate, the Birmingham Barons. Though he never made it to MLB, he later returned to basketball, winning three more championships and two more NBA MVP awards with the Chicago Bulls.
