Tour Itinerary
Your morning begins in the historic area of Spui. Head straight to a family-run business that's been going strong for four generations. They first started baking up delicious staples for locals in 1898 and haven’t stopped since. To this day, they lovingly make hundreds of stroopwafels by hand daily—the perfect way to kick off any Amsterdam food tour!
Then, it’s time to sit down with a slice of Dutch apple pie and coffee in one of Amsterdam's most authentic "brown cafes" This particular locale has been a favorite of prominent writers, artists, and politicians since 1921.
Next, it’s time to wander around this historic part of town. Along the way, you’ll discover a secret 14th-century courtyard, the home and symbols of a 1960s part-political counterculture movement, and the oldest house in Amsterdam—it's still constructed from its original materials!
After taking a stroll around the Spui area, we'll get back to the food—Dutch street food, that is! First, we'll swing by a family-run herring stand that’s been serving up herring and fried fish called kibbeling to hungry locals since the 1980s.
What's more Dutch than potatoes? Our next street food stop is a fry store open since the 1950s, famous for its delicious variety of toppings. We’ll try one of the most unique options on the menu that has interesting connections to Dutch colonial history.
And what would a Dutch food tour be without sampling our most famous export? You’ll cross the canal into the 17th-century working-class neighborhood of Jordaan and pop into a family-run delicatessen, where you’ll be able to sample a variety of our favorite local cheese.
From there, you'll step into the former home of a Dutch painter-turned-cozy eatery. Decorated in the typical neighborhood style, you'll try Dutch classics, bitterballen, stampot, and Dutch sausage with a glass of refreshing Dutch beer.
By the end of the day, you’ll have a complete introduction to traditional Dutch cuisine, as well as the history and culture behind it. There's no better way to experience all of the above than in three of Amsterdam’s most picturesque neighborhoods, hearing stories along the way that bring the city's past to life.
